The Importance of שמות in Judaism: Due Monday Nov 2nd
This week we'll be learning about Shemos and the kedusha of the Name of HaShem. How much does your name affect who you are? Do you know of someone who's name is a big part of their identity? Watch the video below for inspiration: WHY is it so frustrating when this man "messes up" the workers names? https://youtu.be/XhBD1553fhk
Natalie Moses - One's name defines who you are. It is the name you grew up with, were labeled as and who everyone knows you as. However, I do not believe that your name affects who you are. It is just a name your parents liked and wanted to name their child. I believe that the person you are makes your name. It you are a kind, generous person, when people think of your name they will think of a nice, caring person because that is who you are. Your name does not make you a good or bad person - you make you a good or bad person. All in all, your name does not affect who you are, you affect who you are.
Your name doesn't define you. Its what you were given when you were born. Your name is just what people call you to get your attention or label you, etc. For example if your name is Rachel but everyone calls you Miriam, it doesn't make a difference your still you. personally I don't know anyone who's name defines them, except god. God made his name into something that's why its so holy.Your name doesn't matter but its what you make your name into that matters and defines you. -Daphna Ansel
My name, Eliana, means G-d answered me. Before I was conceived, my parents were having trouble having another child. My mother had two miscarriages between me and my older sister, Rachel. I was their last shot, so when I was born my parents were overjoyed. G-d answered them with me!! Although my name doesn't define who I am as a person, it's very special to me and my family. If someone messes up my name, which does happen very often, I simply correct them and understand it may be hard for them to pronounce my name correctly. I never get angry or mad at them. It must have been very frustrating for those workers because he repeatedly pronounced their names wrong and it seemed as if he were purposely mocking them. Names don't define somebody, but they do identify them as a human being.
I do not think a name defines who you are. Your name is something that your parents give you. A lot of times when I travel, people pronounce my name incorrectly and it bothers me a little but my name does not change my attitude or personality. Every one has their own personality. I know many other people with the name Rachel but we are not all the same. We each have our own unique personality. Names don't define us its just a way of identifying a specific person.
When he called them a name that was not their own, you could tell that they got pretty upset. Your name is a big part of who you are, its what you grew up with. You may also have nicknames corresponding to your name that your friends give you based on your personality or actions. Hashem also has multiple 'nicknames' based on his actions like elokim for judgment and yud-k-vav-k for mercy. My name, Shelli, ca be a nickname for the name Michelle, and a countless amount of times I've been asked if my real name is Michelle, sometimes even by the same person more than once. I understand that people my think that when i tell them my name is Shelli but i would most likely say my name is michelle but you can call me shelli. Like the people in the video and myself, you get annoyed when people call you by the wrong name multiple times over, but you do learn to get used to it and understand that it was a mistake. Names are very special to people cause its who they grew up to be, and their name is what they're used to. -Shelli Liebov
To me a name shouldn't have to be a part of who you are. Just like how you wouldn't let a label limit your abilities. What should really count is your personality and the way you present yourself. - Sylvie Culang
My name Yael and in the tanach Yael stabbed someone in the head, so that basically is me. JK not really but I do have that out going personality. I'm someone who's not afraid to stick up for myself or say what I mean. I personally don't appreciate it when someone calls me the wrong name or pronounces my name wrong because I feel like they are taking the thing that differentiates me from everyone else and just taking it away. I also know someone who's name is shai and he is this 6yr old boy who is completely shy. So I do think that names can affect people's identities.

I hear you. Does it every bother you when someone pronounces your name wrong or just calls you the wrong name?!
DeleteDon't be embarrassed of your name. Every name is unique and special. I would be bothered if someone called me by the wrong name hundreds of times.
